So giving the option of the often legally required erasing patterns seems a no brainer, rather than taking an ideological stance against them. Even if it can be argued that commercial file shredders use patterns that could be argued to be snake-oil.

I run the IT department at a hospital and hard drives never leave the location until they are destroyed. The company comes on side with a truck and shredder and destroys hard drives, old backup tapes and basically anything with data on it. They also haul away old towers for us then give us a detailed certified receipt with serial numbers proving destruction. it all shows the equipment was recyled in a green efficient manner and we get certification for that also.
These app "previews" include Plex, Upthere Home, Acronis True Image, ESET DriveSecurity, a file shredder, and Digi.me (for backing up social media). This assortment of add-on software and services is haphazard, and none of it is actually included with the cost of the drive. This is the equivalent of bloatware on a laptop, and we're not keen on it. WD does allow you to "unexpand" the menu so they are all hidden; we recommend that.
