Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the numerical treatment of the large, sparse, stiff, and highly nonlinear systems of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) which typically arise in the modeling of dynamic chemical processes [8]. Existing dynamic flowsheeting packages like DIVA [12] or SPEEDUP [14] provide a powerful modeling platform and a comprehensive set of facilities for steady-state and dynamic simulation. In addition, new concepts and a number of promising strategies have been developed for parameter estimation (PE), design optimization (DO), and optimal control (OC) for dynamic processes described by DAE models.
